November In Downtown Dallas: A Local’s Guide To Holiday Kickoffs, Big Weekends, And Loft Living

November is when downtown Dallas finally commits to fall. The patio heaters come out. The sun drops behind the buildings before you’ve finished your afternoon coffee. And somewhere around the middle of the month, the city quietly starts switching over to holiday mode, one string of lights at a time.

I’ve lived in Dallas my whole life, and November’s always felt like the month with the best balance. The weather’s good enough to be outside, the calendar’s full but not frantic, and the real holiday rush hasn’t started yet. You can still get a dinner reservation.

That’s a good month to live downtown. At Dallas Power & Light Flats, most of what’s worth doing this month is a short walk or a quick ride from home.

Start The Month With A Full Weekend

The first full weekend of November gives you options. TITAS/Dance Unbound brings Pilobolus to Moody Performance Hall on November 6, and if you’ve never seen them, it’s the kind of show that makes you rethink what a human body can do.[1]

On November 7, ThriftCon takes over Exhibit Hall B at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, so bring a tote bag and some patience.[2] That same morning, the Dallas Walk to End Alzheimer’s gathers at Klyde Warren Park.[3] If you’ve got a friend or family member affected by the disease, it’s a meaningful way to spend a Saturday morning, and the park’s always at its best in cool weather.

A Mid-Month Excuse To Get Outside

Klyde Warren Park hosts a Barking Project adoption event on November 14.[3] I’ll be honest: I don’t trust myself to walk through one of these without coming home with a new roommate. If you’ve been thinking about a dog, a pet-friendly downtown building and a park full of other dogs make a pretty good argument.

The Week Downtown Gets Its Holiday Spark

The week before Thanksgiving is when November starts to shift. HYROX Dallas fills the convention center from November 18 through 22, so expect the streets around it to be full of very fit people who look like they’ve had a long day.[2]

Then on November 20, two things happen that tell you the season’s turning. Mystic Pizza: A New Musical comes to the Winspear Opera House as part of Broadway at the Center,[4] and the CultureMap City Rink returns to Main Street Garden.[5] There’s something about seeing people skate downtown, surrounded by office towers, that makes the city feel a little smaller and friendlier. It’s an easy walk from home, which means you can stay out as long as your ankles let you.

Thanksgiving, Downtown Style

Thanksgiving falls on November 26 this year, and for a lot of Dallas families, the day starts with the Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot, now in its 59th year.[6] It’s one of the city’s longest-running traditions, and it’s a lot more fun to run when you don’t have to drive in and find parking at dawn.

After that, the long weekend’s yours. Some people head out of town. I’ve always liked staying put. Downtown gets quieter over the holiday, and there’s something nice about walking through the Arts District on a slow Friday afternoon when half the city is somewhere else.

And if you want to plan ahead, Klyde Warren Park’s tree lighting is set for December 5.[3]

Coming Home To A Building With A Story

Whatever November turns into, it helps when home feels like more than a place to sleep. DPL Flats has more history than most buildings downtown. It dates back to 1903, was expanded in 1931, and has a history tied to Dallas’ original electric utility. Its Art Deco-inspired design came from the Dallas firm Lang & Witchell, and you can still feel that era in the building today.

Inside, the lofts keep the details that make loft living worth it: vaulted ceilings, polished concrete floors, private terraces, and downtown views. You also get the practical side, with stainless steel appliances, a rooftop pool and hot tub, a fitness center, and a party deck. On a crisp November night, that rooftop’s hard to beat.

Why November Is A Good Time To Tour

Touring an apartment in November gives you a real feel for the neighborhood. The weather’s comfortable enough to walk around after, and the holiday season gives you a preview of what living downtown feels like when the city’s at its most festive.

I’d suggest touring in the late afternoon, then sticking around as the lights come on. Walk to dinner. Swing by Main Street Garden once the rink’s open. See whether it feels like the kind of routine you’d want.

November in Dallas doesn’t need a packed itinerary. Pick a couple of things you’re looking forward to, leave room for the unplanned ones, and let home be close enough that the night can go wherever it goes.
